Barbara Schult, 66, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident close to Barron Lake Road and Pokagon Hwy close to Cassopolis when she reportedly drove her Ford Edge SUV round the railroad crossing gates into the trail of the train, in keeping with a Cass County Sheriff’s Dept. release.
Schult was east sure on Pokagon Hwy once, in keeping with witnesses, she passed stationary vehicles and tried to cross over the railroad tracks whereas the gates wherever down and also the visual and sounding signals were engaged.
The engineer of the train, a 52-year-old Battle Creek, Mich. resident, engaged the hand brake on the train however was unable to avoid the collision. The train came to a stop close to Wells Road, roughly 1 / 4 mile from the accident web site.
None of the 191 passengers on the Chicago to city train were slashed, however the train’s engineer was transported to Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph for analysis.
This case remains beneath investigation and at this point it's unknown if alcohol or drug use was an element within the incident.
